Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC)

Modeled after the Public Schools of the United Kingdom

Dhaka Residential Model College (DRMC) was established in 1960 in Mohammadpur, Dhaka on 52 acres of prime land by the then President of Pakistan, Field Marshal Muhammad Ayub Khan. DRMC was founded following the distinguished model of Public Schools in the United Kingdom, focusing on academic excellence, moral integrity, physical fitness, and leadership.

The formal inauguration of the institution was carried out by Mr. Habibur Rahman, the then Minister for Education, on 6th May 1960. Initially, the school was under the direct authority of the Central Government, and responsibility was subsequently transferred to the Provincial Government of East Pakistan in 1962.

In the foundational era, Mr. H. H. Siddiqui served as the Bursar, and Major M. M. Rahman (later Lt. Col.) became the first Principal on 13th March 1961, laying the groundwork for the institution’s enduring traditions. Following his departure in May 1964, Lt. Col. Shafi took over leadership. Earlier, in December 1961, Mr. M. A. Majid joined the administration.

A major organizational milestone arrived in 1965 with the establishment of the Autonomous Board of Governors. In 1966, Mr. K. A. Rahman joined as Vice Principal, bringing vast educational experience, and on 1st May 1966, Mr. Q. N. Huque became the Principal, further elevating the institution’s prestige. In the same year, the school was placed under the Ministry of Education without altering its autonomous governance structure.

In 1967, DRMC achieved another historic leap when it was upgraded to the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) level, inaugurated by Education Minister Mr. K. A. Haque. In February 1967, the Governor of East Pakistan, Janab Abdul Monem Khan, donated funds for a college mosque and recreational facilities. The Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony for 1967 took place on 1st May 1968, presided over by Mr. M. O. Ghani, Vice Chancellor of the University of Dacca (Dhaka).
